“A god of my understanding, la virgencitAA” is an ode to the 12 step fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous, in particular the Latinx Spanish speaking AA groups. AA has and continues to help millions of people recover from alcoholism and other mind altering addictions. The 12 step fellowship encompasses a 12 step course of action based on spiritual practices to be carried out throughout the recovery process. Despite its roots in Oxford Christianity, some of the elements of AA also incorporates cognitive behavioral therapy interventions, psychoeducation, acceptance and commitment work, and reality based testing in a sober peer-led setting. For me, I saw AA work for my friends and for my father which made me join when I decided to stop drinking. Getting sober was the best decision I made in my life."
